February 07’ News from the Band Room (Grade 5-8)

Congratulations to the Band Students from grades 5-8  for a Fantastic Performance at the Winter Concert last month.   It’s obvious that you have all been working hard and that you’re having a great time with your instruments.  You’ve made some great progress these past months.

The middle school is going host an “ARTS NIGHT” on Wednesday, March 14th.  This event will be here from 6:30 - 8 pm.  Each of the ARTS specialists will create opportunities for the students to “show off” what is exciting in their classes.  Band students will perform in the hallways at four computer stations using Smartmusic software.  The 5/6 Grade Band will conclude the evening with a performance at 7:45 pm in the cafeteria.  Things are also coming together for a Spaghetti Supper prior to the event.  Thank you to all the parents who have indicated that they might be willing to help with this event.  You will be contacted soon will some details about this.

Friday afternoon, March 30th the 5/6 Grade Band will travel to Greenfield High School to perform at the state band festival ~ MICCA Festival.  Our performance time is 4:00 pm.  Expect to leave the school in the early afternoon.  Permission slips and more detailed information will go home directly with students.  Parents and friends are encourage to support the band at this performance.    It’s too early to predict, but save the date of Sunday, April 29th.  If the band receives a Gold Medal, they’ll be invited to join other Gold Medal Bands from across the state at a special concert at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.

The Jazz Band has been rehearsing after-school and has really made some great progress.  We are going to travel to Westfield Middle School on May 10th to perform in the IAJE Western MA Junior High Jazz Band Festival.  Last year, the band received a Silver Medal and enjoyed listening to several of the 9 other school jazz bands who performed that day.  More information will go home in early April.

February is a perfect time to think about starting  private lessons on your instrument.  Professional one on one assistance often makes an enormous impact and opens up a whole world of possibilities for young students.  Students who excel in our band classes now, might just be the next All State or All American musician who’ll be representing our town in a few years.  Equally as important, there might be a student challenged for success who finds that private one on one instruction is the missing link needed to help boost their self confidence and esteem so they can find success not only in band but in other academic and social areas!

Band Students are selling Frozen Cookie Dough.  Order Forms  ~ due  Feb. 13th.
Thanks in advance for all of your efforts to support the students & program!
Please try and monitor practice habits at home as we all work to meet new goals!

February 07’ News for the 4th Grade Band

Congratulations to everyone for such a wonderful performance at last month’s Winter Concert!   Listening to the students it’s easy to forget that they have only been playing their instruments for three months.  I am so pleased with the students’ progress and their enthusiasm for learning and performing.  Each week so far has been more and more exciting.  The students have been quite consistent with their attendance even though it’s before school.  This is a tribute to the support that the students are getting at home.  I know how difficult mornings can be with young children, so I appreciate all the effort that goes into making attendance to band successful.
Keep up the great work.   Also  ~ Don’t forget those practice journals in the front of the book!

I have sent home information with band students about how they can obtain the software that I use in the band room.   It is called SMARTMUSIC.   I am hopefully that 60% of the students will have this program at home to assist them with their practicing in the upcoming years.  The cost is $25.00 and is good for a one year subscription.   Please consider this opportunity ~ It can have an enormous impact on the quality of your child’s education.   More information is available on the band website.

Mosier School’s Spring Concert is scheduled for Thursday evening, June 7th at Mosier School.  All 4th grade band students will be performing that evening, and attendance is expected by all.   Reminder ~ We always perform in black & white, and ties are requested for the boys.

Keep checking my website for performance updates and listening examples.  It would be appreciated if you could send me an email so that I can get everyone into my address book.  This makes it easier to send out email broadcasts.  Thanks for all your support.  ~ Brooks Holmes
